Federal Custody Near Simpson
The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates the federal sentenced-prisoner system. It is not a Simpson County physical facility, and the research located no BOP institution within the county. A person arrested locally may enter federal pretrial custody through the U.S. Marshals Service, appear in a federal court docket, and later enter BOP custody after sentence. Each step uses a different record.
A disappearance from Simpson County Detention Center does not establish federal release. A USMS pickup is a transfer. Later admission to a BOP institution is continued custody. Release from BOP means the person has left BOP custody, but it does not establish that all legal restraint ended. Federal supervised release, parole in an applicable case, state custody, ICE detention, or another authority may follow.
| Federal stage | Primary path | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Federal pretrial custody | PACER and USMS context | Court and detention progression |
| BOP imprisonment | BOP inmate locator | Facility and projected/past date |
| BOP release | Past Release Date and no facility | Exit from BOP custody |
| Post-release supervision | Federal docket/probation | Continuing court-ordered restraint |
| Immigration custody | ICE locator and case records | A separate custody system |
Search Federal Simpson Releases
The BOP inmate locator covers federal prisoners in BOP custody from 1982 to the present and includes people released after 1982. Search by BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known. A name search can be refined with age, race, and sex. Use identifiers because common names can produce several people.
- Choose number search when a federal identifier is available.
- Otherwise enter the complete name and supported refiners.
- Compare the register number and identifying fields.
- Read the Release Date and current location together.
- Open the federal docket when sentence or supervision context matters.
- Check another custody system if the facts point to a transfer or hold.
Results can display name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and location. BOP says the locator is updated daily. A future date is projected and can change. An “UNKNOWN” date calls for an inquiry rather than a guess. Records before 1982 may require the National Archives.
The official BOP locator search shows the federal fields and release-date format.

The federal locator should be used only for BOP custody, not as a replacement for Simpson jail or Kentucky DOC records.
Read Federal Release Results
A past Release Date with no listed facility is direct public evidence that the person left BOP custody on that date. A “Released” result has the same system boundary. It does not necessarily mean the person entered the community without supervision. BOP itself warns that someone not in its custody may be held in another correctional system, on parole, or on supervised release.
“Not in BOP Custody” therefore needs context. The person could be in a local or state jail, held by ICE, under USMS responsibility before BOP designation, released under a federal supervision term, or outside the locator's covered records. “Not found” is even weaker because spelling, aliases, record age, or the wrong system may explain the result.
- Release Date
- The BOP date may be projected when future or completed when past.
- Released
- No longer in BOP custody, within the locator's meaning.
- Supervised release
- A federal court-ordered term served in the community after imprisonment.
- Transfer
- Custody moves to another authority; freedom is not established.
Note: Always state “released from BOP custody” unless another record proves the broader destination and legal status.
BOP Record Meaning Limits
The BOP publishes an official explanation of locator records. It describes source coverage, date meanings, update limits, and reasons a person may not appear. Those caveats should remain next to any conclusion drawn from a result.

The captured explanation supports a narrow custody conclusion and warns against treating the locator as a complete record of every federal or local detention stage.
The locator's Release Date may reflect computation under federal rules and can change before release. It is not a Simpson County projected-release calculation. County jail credit, federal judgment details, designation, good-conduct time, later court action, and agency calculations may affect the result. Do not build a date calculator from the imposed sentence alone.
System boundary: BOP release does not rule out USMS, ICE, state, county, or court-supervision obligations.
Federal Dockets and Supervision
PACER is the federal docket fallback. A docket can show charges, detention orders, judgment, sentence, commitment, later modifications, and a supervised-release term. It explains legal authority and post-prison obligations. It may not record the exact minute of physical exit from a BOP institution.
Use the case number when known. Confirm the defendant's identity, district, judgment, and dates. A sentence may include imprisonment followed by supervised release. That term is not Kentucky parole or Simpson County probation. Federal probation officers administer federal community supervision under the court's authority. The BOP locator should not be read as a supervision database.
If a past BOP date conflicts with a docket expectation, preserve both. The judgment date, credit computation, release processing, and public locator update can reflect different events. Obtain the relevant order or agency record instead of choosing whichever date seems more convenient. For a final status question, the court or responsible federal supervision office may hold the controlling information that is publicly disclosable.
USMS Transfers from Simpson
The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal pretrial detention and prisoner transport but offers no comparable public historical release locator. When USMS picks up a person from Simpson County Detention Center, the local event is a transfer. Request the Simpson jail movement record and follow the federal docket. If a sentence later results in BOP placement, the BOP locator may then show the institution and date.
USMS can house federal detainees in contract or local facilities. Physical location and legal custody are not always the same. A person may remain in a jail setting while held for a federal court. The Simpson current list, if it displays the person, shows local physical custody context but not the full federal case. PACER provides the judicial progression.
No USMS detention facility was verified in Simpson County. The U.S. Marshals custody page is a system path for possible transfers, not a claim that the agency operates a local jail. Follow the later custodian rather than assuming the person returned to the community.
ICE After Federal Custody
ICE's Online Detainee Locator System is mainly a current-custody tool. Search with an A-number and country of birth or the biographical fields offered on the live screen. A “not found” result proves little. Spelling, transliteration, processing lag, transfer, release, removal, excluded populations, or another custody system may explain it.
A BOP release followed by ICE pickup is release from BOP and transfer into immigration custody. Those facts can coexist. The person has not necessarily entered the community. Similarly, a local Simpson-to-ICE movement is a transfer. The BOP locator cannot exclude that possibility.
Use the ICE detainee locator only when case facts support an immigration-custody check. Preserve the BOP result, federal docket, and ICE result with their dates. Different reporting schedules can create a short gap between systems. No ICE detention center was verified within Simpson County.
Request Federal Prison Records
When the locator is unclear, identify the specific record needed. A request might seek a sentence computation, release date explanation, designation history, or another existing BOP record. Provide the register number, full name, and date range. Privacy and disclosure rules can limit access to another person's detailed record, so do not promise that every field will be released.
For older pre-1982 federal incarceration, follow BOP's direction to the National Archives when applicable. For the legal sentence or supervised-release order, obtain the docket document through PACER or the appropriate federal clerk. For the physical movement out of Simpson County Detention Center, ask the Simpson County Jailer for the release or transfer timestamp and destination.
Save the request, proof of delivery, response, attachments, and any cited restriction. If the record is archived, ask for the series, location, and copy route. A narrow request tied to a register number is more reliable than asking an office to identify an unknown person from a common name.
Confirm Federal Simpson Release
The best public evidence for completed BOP release is a past Release Date with no current BOP facility, read with BOP's own system caveat. PACER can then explain any supervised-release term. When another hold is plausible, check the appropriate state, local, USMS, or ICE channel. A single database cannot describe every layer.
For the path into federal custody, use the Simpson jail movement record and federal docket. For the prison stage, use BOP. For later supervision, use the federal judgment and responsible court channel. This sequence avoids calling a transfer a release or a BOP exit a final discharge.
The only confirmed adult detention facility physically in Simpson County is Simpson County Detention Center. The Federal Bureau of Prisons appears among the site's custody systems because a Simpson case can enter federal custody, not because a federal prison stands in the county.
